Supervisor development: what is needed, where is it going?

Professor Sally Barnes is Professor of Doctoral Education in the School of Education at the University of Bristol. She is the Faculty Education Director for Social Sciences and Law and Director of the ESRC funded Southwest Doctoral Training Partnership. She has many years of experiences supervising doctoral students and working with supervisors, including at the University of Bergen.

Dr Kate Whittington is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Bristol. She has been Graduate Education Director for the Faculty of Health Sciences for five years with responsibility for over 300 postgraduate research students. Kate is currently Chair of the University’s PGR Review Group that monitors, reviews and updates the regulations and code of practice for research degrees.

Dr Anne Lee is an Associate Professor at the University of Stavanger, Research Fellow at the University of Bristol and author of ‘Successful Research Supervision’, Anne is frequently invited to speak at conferences and workshops in the UK, Scandinavia and mainland Europe about her work on research supervision. She is an evaluator for the Erasmus project on the modern doctorate (Superprofdoc.eu). See more at www.drannelee.wordpress.com

Professor Roger Saljö
Preliminary title: Experiences from doctoral education and supervision in Sweden

Professor Roger Säljö is Professor of education and psychology of education at Göteborg University. He is the Director of LinCS – The Linnaeus Centre for Research on Learning, Interaction and Mediated Communication in Contemporary Society – a national centre of excellence in research funded by the Swedish Research Council (2006-cont.). He has served as Dean of faculty at Linkoping University, as Vice-Rector at Göteborg University and as member of many Scandinavian funding agencies. He served as the President of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) between 2005 and 2007. Dr. Säljö has supervised 50 Ph. D. students to their degrees in different faculties. He is the member of the editorial board of about 15 international journals, including Culture & Psychology (Sage), Journal of Applied Linguistics, Instructional Science (Elsevier), International Journal of Educational Research, and Learning and Instruction (Elsevier). He served as an editor of Learning and Instruction for six years. Dr. Säljö has also received various awards including The Sweden-American Foundation Scholarship for Advanced Studies in The United States, 1988, the EARLI Oeuvre Award for scientific contributions to the field of learning and instruction, 1999. In 2006 he was awarded the distinction of Finland Distinguished Professor.
