Cooperation project

Thanks to a buss tour in China and a call from Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU), the faculty were able to send a delegation of 12 to National Law University, Delhi (NLUD) for a workshop aimed at master students and PhD candidates.
A few years ago, Vice Dean for Education Bjørnar Borvik attended a seminar in China, and on a bus tour he met Professor Harpreet Kaur from NLUD, and a cooperation was born. Shortly after, SIU annouced possible funding for cooperation between Indian and Norwegian institutions. The faculty applied for, and received, the necessary funding to realize the project.

After that, there have been seminars, workshops and student exchanges at both institutions.

Project goals

  • Initiate and build relations between NLUD and Faculty of Law, UiB
  • Develop and sign a regulatory framework for student mobility between NLUD and Bergen, in form of a cooperative agreement and implementation of two-way student mobility between the NLUD and Bergen.
  • Networking and transfer of knowledge between researchers from NLUD and Bergen.
  • Strengthening of the research environments at NLUD and Bergen, especially within the area of Competition Law, Corporate Law and Company Law.

Workshop at NLUD March 2017

On March 12, Professor Asbjørn Strandbakken (Dean), Professor Berte-Elen Konow (Vice Dean), Professor Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde, Masters Student Siri Elisabeth Bernssen, Masters Student Sindre Anfinsen Sandal, six PhD candidates: Håvard Ormberg, Mari Knapstad Nilssen, Brage Thunestvedt Hatløy, Esmeralda Colombo, Marie Holm and John Reidar Nilsen, and adviser and PhD coordinator Gunhild Brubakken travelled to NLUD. They visited India for a week, and their stay could offer both professional and cultural experiences.

The first day was devoted to a seminar on Indian law culture, including environmental law in the Indian Supreme Court, Indian competition law, Indian legislation and the Indian Law Comission and Children in Indian criminal law, with a special emphasis on infanticide.
The workshop with presentations from Norwegian and Indian students and PhD candidates lasted for two days. During the stay, the delegation also got to visit Taj Mahal, participate in the Hindu spring festival Holi and see some of New Delhi outside NLUD campus area.

Further cooperation

Two Indian PhD candidates will visit the Faculty of Law in September 2017, and they will stay for one month. In November the Indian project management and leaders from NLUD will visit the faculty. These visits will end the current project period.
Both the Faculty of Law and NLUD want further cooperation, and are waiting for new calls from SIU to be able to realize this.
