Where does one work with an education in pure mathematics?

Main content

What does one become with an education in pure mathematics? The answer is usually that nothing gives you better qualifications to get the best jobs. Today, one is never fully trained for something, but constantly learns new things. One also comes to the stage where one wants to do other and newer things. And a course in pure mathematics develops just the maturity and skills required to meet the challenges that a diverse working life provides. Here is a selection of our graduates and where they work.

The master's degree programme in pure mathematics gives you solid skills in independent work, to master complex and technical subjects, as well as to reason about and present these. These are properties that are sought after and important in professional life, and give our graduates great flexibility and adaptability to different occupations. Examples include careers in telecommunications and informatics, oil-related activities, finance, insurance, management, research and teaching. You can, for example, work as a teacher if you also complete practical-pedagogical education. If you proceed with a Ph.D., then research positions in colleges and universities both in Norway and the rest of the world are possible.

The American Mathematical Society have made an overview of where people with a bachelor's degree in mathematics work. Here they tell about how competence and maturity in mathematics has been helpful to them in their work.
