The official length of a full-time master programme is 2 years (120 credits), with a submission deadline for the thesis. Master's programmes consist of two parts, a theoretical part with courses totaling 60 credits, and a Master's thesis of 60 credits. Some programmes also offer a shorter 30 credit thesis, with a theoretical curriculum of 90 credits.

Students can apply for leave of absence, part-time studies and extension of the submission deadline. The deadline for submission of the thesis, and any agreements on part-time studies or leave, are set in the Master's degree agreement between student, supervisor and programme board.

The supplementary regulations for degree studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, supplement the University of Bergen overarching regulations and guidelines.
