I am the current Head of Department at the Department of Earth Science.

I am a structural geologist and tectonicist by background and research interests. My main ambition is to conduct research that yields new knowledge within, or which may help solve problems related to: (1) fundamental geological processes, (2) geohazards (mass movement and earthquakes) and (3) energy and energy transition.

I am also the Editor-in-Chief of Basin Research, which is an international journal in the field of sedimentary basin systems, published by the IAS, EAGE and Wiley.

Specific research activities and interests

  • Structural geology and tectonics
  • Sedimentary basins
  • Reservoir geology - clastic and carbonate reservoirs
  • Integrated analysis of sedimentological and structural reservoir heterogeneities
  • Tectonosedimentary basin evolution
  • Faults, fractures, deformation bands and their effect on fluid flow
  • Geometry and evolution of normal faults
  • Dynamic analogue reservoir studies (analogue reservoir modelling and fluid flow simulation)
  • Application of remote sensing technologies in analogue reservoir studies: LIDAR, UAV and satellite/aerial imagery
  • Salt tectonics
  • Tectonic controls on drainage and depositional systems

Application to geothermal energy, hydrocarbons and CO2 storage.
