I am Professor of gender research in the social sciences at the Centre for Women’s and Gender Research (SKOK) and affiliated with the research unit International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), University of Bergen (http://imer.b.uib.no/). I hold a Doctoral degree in sociology (Dr.polit.), but my scientific production is predominantly multidisciplinary, combining sociological approaches with social anthropology, human geography, critical political theory and continental philosophy, including critical theory. Thematically, many of my publications revolve around issues related to migrations & minority studies, such as multiculturalism, post-colonialism, citizenship, democracy, borders & boundaries, nationalism and geo-politics. My research within the second major subject area, gender & sexuality studies, can be grouped into two sub-categories: 1) feminist theory and problems of difference, which addresses questions of e.g. social justice, and 2) gender and sexuality relations and subject formations, which relates to the basic question 'what is gender?' In recent years, I have also returned to the field of urban studies and politics of difference, within which I wrote my Mphil thesis. Informed by critical urban theory, my work within this field focuses on policy frames and planning for pluralism/diversity. I take these thematic fields to be productive entry points for discussing prevalent conceptual frames and their foundational assumptions within the social sciences, related to the foundational question 'how is society possible?' Among my publications is Multicultural Dialogue: Dilemmas, Paradoxes, Conflicts (Berghahn Books, 2010/2012), which was selected for debate in Dialogues in Human Geography’s book forum, 2012: http://dhg.sagepub.com/content/2/2.toc

As of 2017, I am part of the research project entitled WAIT - Waiting for an uncertain future: the temporalities of irregular migration, funded by The Research Council of Norway - Cultural Conditions Underlying Social Change (SAMKUL) (project leader Christine M. Jacobsen).

The WAIT project uses theories of temporality and the concept of 'waitinghood' as tools for producing new and critical insights into the cultural conditions and implications of migration. 'Waitinghood' is about the condition of prolonged waiting, uncertainty and temporariness which is characteristic of irregular migration. WAIT investigates how temporal structures related to irregular migration are shaped by legal regimes, cultural norms and power relationships, and how they shape subjective experiences and life projects. The project focuses on four European migration-hubs, notably Oslo (Norway), Stockholm (Sweden), Marseille (France) and Hamburg (Germany).
