Tunisia in transition - The Arab Spring and its aftermath

Main content

The "Arab Spring" started in Tunisia when a young fruit seller called Mohamed Bouazizi burnt himself in the small city of Sidi Bouzid on the 17th December 2010. This act was followed by a wave of protests in the whole country which forced the dictator Ben Ali to leave the country on 14th January 2011. This led to the collapse of the totalitarian political system.

The lecture will provide insights in the main moments of Tunisian political history. It will shed light on the political assets of the first Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba and discuss the features of the Ben Ali era that led to the Tunisian revolution. Ben Amor will present the main achievements of the democratic transition in Tunisia and point out the challenges Tunisia is facing during the process of transformation.

Free and open to all.
