Biomaterials – synthetic or biological – is an inter- and cross-disciplinary field comprising basic research and clinical studies on responses to materials used in dentistry and medicine. The Biomaterials Research Cluster is based at the Department of Clinical Dentistry, Department of Clinical Medicine, and Orthopedic Clinic of Haukeland University Hospital. It also involves departments at the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, national and international partners. 

"The overall goal of the Biomaterials Research cluster is to contribute to safer, more effective, and longer lasting (nano)materials for dental and medical use."

The Biomaterials group encompasses several research areas covering both in vitro and in vivo aspects of pre-clinical and clinical research:
