Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge hydrothermal fluids

MSc project of Thomas Øfstegaard Viflot

Main content

Project title

Geochemistry and geobiology of low-temperature fluid formation in Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge hydrothermal systems

Supervision

Eoghan Reeves

Project description

This project will examine the chemical compositions of several low-temperature hydrothermal fluids venting at Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge hot spring systems, such as Loki's Castle and Jan Meyen, and determine the geochemical changes occurring during formation from their parent high-temperature fluids (i.e. black smokers). The goal of this project will be to recreate the geochemical landscape associated with low-temperature fluid formation to better constrain interactions of microbial biogeochemical processes with these fluids.
