Peter S. Baker: Alice in Wonderland for Three Cultures. Translating a Classic into Old English

Alice in Wonderland in Old English

Main content

Peter S. Baker, University of Virginia, will give a guest lecture about the work on his translation of Alice in Wonderland into Old English:

Alice in Wonderland for Three Cultures: Translating a Classic into Old English

The translation has been comissioned by the North American Lewis Carroll Society in connection with the 150th anniversary of Alice and is due for publication on 21 September this year.

Prior knowledge of Old English is not required and the lecture should be of interest to medievalists, Carroll aficionados, diachronic linguists and translation theorists alike. (How do you render "tea" and "croquet" in a medieval language? And what about all the puns?)

Also, Baker has more or less promised to make people laugh.

Can you resist?
