The Future of Women's and Gender Research in the Disciplines

At this workshop we invite scholars who work or have worked within gender research to think about the future of women's and gender research in the disciplines.

In the 90's gender was brought firmly on the agenda of most disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences. In later years, however, many of those who did women's and gender research have moved on to work on issues that are less obviously related to gender. At the same time, there is an increasing demand for gender perspectives in disciplines outside the social sciences and humanities, including medicine, technology, physics etc.

At this workshop we invite scholars who work or have worked within gender research to think about the future of women's and gender research in the disciplines.
One question that we want to ask is what women’s and gender research might become if its subjects are no longer obviously women, or its object is no longer “gender” itself.

How do projects in the disciplines build upon and extend theoretical, substantive, and methodological concerns originating in women's and gender studies even when they do not explicitly draw on a feminist archive? How do such projects demonstrate the potential of women’s and gender research more broadly, to speak to dimensions of social life not self-evidently “gendered?” And what might this mean for developing gender research in new areas?

We invite participants from each of the disciplines to hold a 20 minutes presentation addressing the question of:
What is the status of ‘gender’ and ‘feminist’ perspectives in your discipline internationally, nationally, and at UiB?
What are the major research questions currently being addressed?
(How) can inter disciplinary gender research contribute to re-energizing, or be energized by, gender and feminist research in the disciplines?
