ECTS Credits

The bachelor's programme in Education has a scope of 180 credits, and a 3-year nominal period of study.

Education, knowledge, learning and teaching are central themes of the bachelor's programme. These are themes that not only are important in traditional educational institutions, but also in work life and society in general. The programme addresses these themes and explains them philosophically, theoretically and in light of changes to society.

The goal of the programme is to promote students' knowledge, understanding and competence to act on educational challenges and practices. It will qualify students to organise, execute and assess information, training and teaching measures at educational institutions, businesses and organisations.

Required Learning Outcomes

A graduate with a bachelor's degree in Education from the Faculty of Psychology, University of Bergen will have:

Knowledge of:

central topics within the field of education
the unique characteristics and history of the field
relevant issues related to the field of education and professional ethics
how to stay informed in the field of education

The skills to:

analyse and reflect on issues and topics related to learning and education
use academic materials in the planning, implementation, further development and evaluation of teaching and education measures
critically search for, process and evaluate, knowledge and information

The general competence to:

write an academic text and master the norms of sources and documentation in the field
work both independently and with others in a group
perform project-based work and plan and complete tasks over a period of time
communicate and present educational topics both verbally and in writing

Admission Requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification or the equivalent. It is also possible to apply for admission based on prior learning and work experience.

Introductory Courses

Intorducotry courses are PED110 Introduction to Education (15 ECTS) in the 1. semester and EXPHILPSSEM/EKS Examen Philosophicum (10 ECTS) in the 4. semester.

Compulsory units

The specialization consists of 90 credits and the following courses:

PED111: Philosophy of education (15 credits) presents the basic philosophical assumptions on which educational practice is built, and directs attention to how different branches in the field of education discuss issues regarding education, bildung, knowledge, learning and teaching.

PED112: Pedagogical perspectives on learning (15 credits) provides a basic introduction to learning and learning theory from an educational perspective. You will gain knowledge about, understanding of, and practical experience with, different forms of written and communicative skills.

PED113: Learning in and for the workplace (15 credits) provides an introduction to the relationship between knowledge, learning and learning processes in different contexts. Key topics are the relationship between different perspectives on learning and the practical learning process, the relationship between formal training in established institutions and informal learning in everyday life and work, and use of new technologies for learning.

PED200: Education in a changing society (15 credits) directs attention towards the purpose and function of educational institutions in society from different perspectives: historical, sociological, cultural and political. The course also addresses how changes in society influence education, focusing particularly on a multicultural perspective.

PED210: Scientific methods (15 credits) provides a basic introduction to various methodological approaches and basic norms for scientific practice in the disciplines of education and special education. This involves qualitative and quantitative procedures, as well as their scientific and ethical foundations.

PED212: Bachelor's thesis in education (15 credits). Working on your Bachelors thesis will teach you how to structure an academically independent work. You will develop a scientific approach to analysing and writing, learn what is required of larger written products, and how to structure your work.

Elective courses make up the final 65 credits of the degree. In principle they may consist of any type of approved higher education that does not overlap with the compulsory components of the degree. We recommend PED115 in the 3. semester and PED116 in the 4. semester as well as courses in psychology, health, sociology, social anthropology, administration and organization, information science, art, culture and media, and philosophy.

All courses that are part of the specialization are compulsory for the degree, and for further admission to master's studies. An application may be submitted to replace PSYK202 www.uib.no/emne/PSYK202Awith a method course from the bachelor's programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Study period abroad

There are many options for students who want to take part of their bachelor's education in another country. Exchanges can take place during the 5th semester, which is the semester allocated entirely to elective courses. The University of Bergen has many exchange agreements inside and outside Europe.

Teaching methods

The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, group work and supervision. The programme emphasises that students will experience varied forms of work and assessment. ICT will be used actively in the teaching.

Assessment methods

The programme aims to give the students experience with different forms of assessment. The following forms of assessment are used during the study programme: written examinations, academic essays, portfolio assessment, home examinations, project assignments, bachelors thesis and oral examinations.

Grading scale

The grading scale A-F or passed/not passed is used to assess the different courses.

Diploma and Diploma supplement

Diplomas are issued after the degree has been attained.

Access to further studies

The completed Bachelor's degree in Education qualifies for admission to the Master's programme in Education (Full-time or part-time programme).

Employability

A bachelor's degree in Education provides a foundation of knowledge that qualifies for work within the fields of teaching and training, HR, and processes of development in different institutions. As a graduate from the field of social sciences, you will have the tools to understand the individual in a cultural and social perspective and, through such knowledge, contribute constructively to a number of development processes. University graduates from the education programme work in both public and private sectors; as instructors, educational consultants, and in similar professions. The different career paths all have in common a high demand of competence on the relations between learning, knowledge and communication.
