Research funds

To be admitted to the doctoral education, the candidate must have enough research funds to complete the doctoral education.

Main content

Typically, research funds should be spent on books and programs, conference and course participation, data collection and data processing expenses, fieldwork expenses, proofreading etc. Candidates employed as research fellows at the University of Bergen are allotted a fixed sum. If funding exceeding the standard amount allotted is required to complete the doctoral project, this must be clarified before seeking admission.

In addition to the standard amount of funding, the candidate can apply to the faculty for travel expenses for research stays abroad. This arrangement applies mostly to candidates employed as research fellows at the faculty and candidates in possession of quota grants at the University of Bergen. Candidates possessing other types of funding (Research Council of Norway fellows or candidates possessing external funding) may be considered if there is any funding left.

As far as funding is concerned, there are three categories of doctoral candidates:

1. University research fellows and Norgesnett research fellows employed at the University of Bergen
Such research fellows are allotted 36 000 kroner annually, a total of 144 000 kroner.

The funds are supposed to cover research expenses and training-module expenses, e.g. books and programs, data collection and data processing, participation at courses and conferences, fieldwork, proofreading etc. These funds can also be used to purchase equipment necessary for the performance of the PhD project. Purchased equipment remains the property of the University of Bergen.

The funds may be transferred from year to year so one can save up for longish research stays abroad and fieldwork.

It is important that one plans properly when spending funds.

The funds are administrated by the department which also does the accounts. All invoices, travel expenses etc. must be submitted to the department. The funds are transferred from the faculty to the department annually when the budget is being allocated.

The funds may be used as long as the candidate is employed as a research fellow. Any funds not spent fall to the department.

2. Research Council of Norway fellows employed at the University of Bergen
Research Council of Norway fellows at the Faculty of Social Sciences are awarded 36 000 kroner annually, a total of 108 000 kroner. If longish periods of fieldwork are required as a part of the project, funding for such must be sought from the Research Council of Norway. Funding for fieldwork will thus be additional to the standard grant awarded by the Research Council.

The funds and any extra project funding are administrated by the department and charged to the project. All invoices, travel receipts etc must be submitted to the department.

The funds may be used as long as the candidate is employed as a research fellow. Any funds not spent will fall to the department.

3. Others
This group pertains to candidates employed as research fellows at university colleges and research institutes, candidates employed at an external institution, candidates receiving grants and others.

Externally financed candidates not employed at Bergen University are required to have adequate research funds to complete their doctoral education. A realistic budget for research expenses must be included in the admission application. Coverage of the research expenses must be confirmed by the source of funding.
