If you are not enrolled as a student at the University of Bergen, you can apply to sit an exam as an external candidate.

About external candidates

If you wish to attend a single course without admission to a study programme, you can apply to complete a course as an external candidate.

If your application is approved, you have the right to sit the exam and attend public lectures in the course(s) you have applied for. An approved application does not mean that you have gained admission to a study programme at the University of Bergen – you will not receive a semester card or student rights, and you cannot apply for financial support through the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen).

Which courses can you apply for?

You can apply to sit the exam in open courses that do not contain any compulsory requirements.  Any limitations for a course are described in the course description.

What must be enclosed with the application?

By the application deadline you must enclose:

  • complete documentation of your higher education entrance qualification
  • documentation of experience (if relevant)
  • confirmation of a name change (if applicable)

See the website of the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (NUCAS) for more information on the demands for the higher education entrance qualification.

Processing of the application

The Faculty of Social Sciences processes applications after the deadline. You will receive an answer by a letter in the mail.

Payment of Fees

  • Courses of up to 15 ECTS credits: 3 000 NOK
  • Courses of up to 30 ECTS credits: 5 000 NOK
  • Courses of up to 60 ECTS credits: 8 000 NOK

The deadline to pay the fee will be specified on the invoice that is sent once your application is approved. If the fee is not paid within the due date, the examination registration(s) will be annulled. Already paid fees will not be paid back.
