UPED631 Hot moments in teaching and learning: Handling conflict or tension in the university classroom (day 1)

This course is intended to increase participants' capacity to address conflict as a learning opportunity for both educators and students.

Main content

Participants will be able to assess what knowledge and skills are helpful to educators when conflict and tension arise in teaching and learning situations.

This module adresses both hot moments that can be anticipated (i.e., controversial subject matter is part of the curriculum) and hot moments tat can arise in any learning environment as a result of group dynamics, class discussion, or unexpected events.

The course is open for all academic staff (ansatte i vitenskapelige stillinger) at the University of Bergen. First priority goes to participants in the University Pedagogy program ("Utviklingsprogram i universitetspedagogikk").

The course takes place over three consecutive days, during which participants will explore educational theory relevant to difficult classroom moments, as well as reflect on their own teaching practice.  We will use written cases, video, and theatre as tools for exploring conflict and tension in the classroom and in supervision situations.
