How to criticise Glock's understanding of perspicuous
representations (without presupposing the correctness of therapeutic readings)
Abstract: This paper takes as its starting point Phil Hutchinson's
2004 critique of Glock?s understanding of perspicuous representations.
Glock believes that perspicuous representations clarify confusions and
constitute a mapping of how words can be used and what makes sense to
say. Hutchinson (and Read) maintain that perspicuous representations
only remove confusion. I want to show that we can improve on the
critique of Glock even without assuming that the therapeutic reading
is attractive as a philosophical position.
