658 more UiB doctorates
1712 persons have received doctor’s degrees at the University of Bergen, during the last ten years. This is 658 more than in the previous ten year period. 108 new doctors will receive their diplomas on Friday.
On Friday 29th January, the 108 candidates who disputed for their doctor’s degrees during the last half of 2009 will be honoured. A total of 223 persons took their doctor’s degree at UiB last year. This is the next highest number in the history of the university.
-It’s very satisfying to see so many disputations at UiB. The numbers are a direct result of a deliberate plan aimed at improving research education in the various professional milieus here at the university, says Sigmund Grønmo.
Whilst 223 candidates took their doctor’s degree in 2009, the number in 1990 was 70. The number of doctorates has gradually increased over the past twenty years. 1050 doctor’s degrees were conferred at the University of Bergen during the 1990’s. Between 2000 and 2009 the number increased to 1712.
One in five of women doctors take their doctor’s degree at UiB
99 women disputed for their doctor’s degrees at UiB during 2009, ten times as many as in 1990 when only ten women received doctor’s degrees. Every fifth women who has taken a doctor’s degree in Norway has taken it at UiB during recent years.
On average a candidate disputed for a doctor’s degree every day last autumn. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry had the most candidates last autumn, with 36 disputations. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences had 31 candidates, whilst the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Psychology had 14 and 13 candidates respectively. The Faculty of Law had 6 candidates and the Faculty of Humanities had 8.
Doctors from 41 countries
The 2009 candidates come from all over the world, and represent 41 nations.
-We want the University of Bergen to be visible internationally, and it is therefore extremely satisfying to see the international breadth of UiB research, says Grønmo.
Scientists from the following countries took their doctor’s degree at UiB during 2009: Tanzania, Nigeria, Morocco, Uganda, Cameroon, South Africa, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Gaza, Iran, Turkey, India, Russia, Spain, Rumania, Scotland, Island, Poland, Kenya, Namibia, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, USA, Colombia, Chile, Panama, Cambodia, Bangladesh, China, France, Faroe Islands, Germany, Bosnia, England, Kosovo, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Italy and Bulgaria.
