Mapping the Earth Below the Oceans

Some 55 million years ago the continental crust between Norway and Greenland had thinned to such an extent that it broke up. Since then Norway and Greenland have been drifting apart, and new oceanic crust have been created in between the continents. Large quantities of sediments have been collected in this constantly growing rift which today is known as the North Atlantic. This makes the area particularly interesting to the scientists in the marine geology and geophysics group at the University in Bergen.

High-resolution Holocene climate reconstructions from high northern latitudes: identifying modes of climate variability and possible inter-hemispheric climate linkages

The main research question for this PhD project is to examine Holocene climate variability of Arctic Norway, its rate of change and its interhemispheric linkages. Sediment records of distal glacier-fed lakes in front of glaciers (see Figure 1) will be analyzed at a high temporal resolution by the means of multiple sediment parameters and dating techniques. The results will be combined with quaternary geological mapping and independently dated terminal moraines. The study sites are located in Finnmark, Arctic Norway, at the glacier Langfjordjøkulen and on the island of Arnøya. The objective of this project is a high-resolution (decadal) reconstruction of glacier and climate variability during the time span of the Late Glacial and Holocene in the northern Polar Region, an area that is witnessing rapid ongoing climate change at present.
