The department's eight research groups reflect the span in research activities, from fundamental molecular-level theoretical and spectroscopic investigations, synthesis and investigation of complex organic molecules to applied studies related to petroleum exploration and the chemical process industry.

Digital tour of the UiB
UiB researcher, Jill Walker Rettberg, has produced a digital guide of the university campus which can be accessed by cell phones. There is some uncertainty however about which direction the technology behind the programme is taking.
