Ongoing research and teaching within the fields of bacteriology, virology and immunology take place at the section. The academic fields of bacteriology, virology and immunology interact closely with the corresponding diagnostic sections at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Haukeland University Hospital. Professors of bacteriology, virology and immunology hold senior consultant positions at the corresponding diagnostic sections of the hospital. Likewise, doctors at the hospital hold affiliated academic positions at the Section for microbiology and immunology of the Gade institute. The Blood Bank and transfusion medicine at Haukeland University Hospital is also academically associated with the Section for Microbiology and Immunology.

In 2009 the entire Section for Microbiology and Immunology of the Gade institute moved into new facilities at the 5th floor of the new Laboratory Building. Haukeland University Hospital's Department of Microbiology moved into the 4th floor, and its diagnostic laboratory of immunology fused with transfusion medicine (the Blood Bank) into the new Department of Immunology on the 3rd floor.

The new Laboratory Building offers modern laboratories, core facilities and equipment suited for advanced translational research based upon molecular biology, molecular medicine, functional genomics and systems biology.
