The Section for Pathology encompasses different fields of organ pathology, cytology, oral pathology, forensic medicine and forensic dentistry. Beginning in 2008, the Laboratory of oral pathology became part of the Gade Institute. The Laboratory of Molecular Pathology is coorganized between the Gade Institute, University of Bergen, and Haukeland University Hospital.

The Gade Institute was founded in 1912. In 1936 the institute was divided into one Department of Pathology and one Department of Sero-bacteriology. The Department of Pathology moved into the new Main Building of Haukeland University Hospital when this was built in 1982. In 2003, the Department of Pathology and Department of Microbiology and Immunology were united into the new Gade Institute. The Department names were changed to Sections. The Section for Pathology and the Section for Microbiology and Immunology are from the summer of 2009 separated only by a short walking bridge between the Main Building and the Laboratory Building of Haukeland University Hospital.
