Annelie Hellvard - New PhD Candidate at The Gade Institute
Annelie Hellvard has recently been employed as a PhD Candidate at The Gade Institute.
Project
The title of Annelie’s project is “Small molecule inhibitors as a novel drug target in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis”. Chronic periodontal disease (PD), the most prevalent infectious inflammatory disease of mankind, is strongly linked to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Regardless of etiology, RA and PD could share a mechanism, which drives the pathogenic developments in these seemingly totally different diseases. This common platform is chronic inflammation and, therefore, a design of novel drugs controlling the inflammation is a clue to successful treatment.
The aim of the project is to develop therapeutic strategies for treatment of both RA and PD based on small molecule inhibition of newly identified but already well established and promising targets for RA and PD.
Financing and Work Place
Annelie’s project is financed by the European Union’s FP7 research grant Gums & Joints. Her period of employment runs from January 1, 2012 until December 31, 2013. Annelie works at Broegelmann Research Laboratory. Principal supervisor is Postdoctor Piotr Mydel and co-supervisor is Professor Roland Jonsson.
