Lars Akslen (Tumor Biology Research Group)
Lead by Professor Lars A. Akslen, M.D. Ph.D. the present research group was established in 1995 and has focused on translational cancer research, with special attention to the molecular pathology and tissue markers of aggressive tumors, and how to predict prognosis and response to cancer treatment.
Several types of human tumors are being studied, such as melanoma and endocrine-related cancer (breast, prostate, endometrium, ovarium, thyroid), and we rely on our collections of fresh and fixed tumor tissue and multiple methods made available for morphologic and molecular

Main Projects
Our group has since 1995 focused on translational studies of various tumors, with special attention in recent years to angiogenesis and markers of aggressive cancers. The tumors studied represent a wide variety of clinical and pathological characteristics. We have established prospective (since 1996) and retrospective population-based patient materials (biobanks), concentrating on high-quality tissue collection and sampling routines for fresh and fixed tumor tissues, quality assurance of patient records, clinical databanks, and information on baseline biomarkers. We also have long experience in statistical analyses and survival modeling. Complete follow-up is ensured by collaboration with the population-based Cancer Registry of Norway (established 1953). A network of local, national and international collaborators has been established.
