The Department of Earth Science was established January 2003 by merging the 'Department of Geology' and the 'Department of Solid Earth Physics'.

The department is located on the 3rd. and 4th. floors at the southern end of the University's Science Building.

Research is carried out within 5 thematic groups: 'Geodynamics', 'Quaternary Geology and Paleoclimate', 'Marine Geology and Geophysics', 'Petroleum Geoscience' and 'Geobiology'.

The department is involved in three centres of excellence:
The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research
The Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research
The Centre for Geobiology
