Forging researchers
While the UiB as a whole has almost ten times as many MSc students as PhD students, the Geophysical institute (GFI) hosts more PhDs than Master students.
On average, there are two PhD students for each professor at GFI. This high ratio is the result of the Institute´s strong research focus, as well as the ability to acquire external research grants (notably from the Research Council of Norway and the European Commission Framework Programmes) which funds 90% of our PhD candidates.
As of 2011, 46% of our PhD students come from abroad (Finland, Germany, Iceland, India, Iran, Italy, Russia, Spain and Sweden) and the gender ratio is very close to 50:50.
