The new G.O. Sars

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the University of Bergen (UiB) joined forces to build a new, state-of-the-art research vessel.

Called the G.O. Sars after a renowned Norwegian marine biologist, it is one of the most advanced RV in the world (more about the Sars family - in Norwegian).

The ship was officially launched 7 May, 2003 in Bergen. It was awarded the Norwegian Best Ship award for 2003 (read more in news).

In June-July 2004 it will undertake a major two-month expedition to explore the ecosystems of the deep-sea in the waters around the northern mid-Atlantic Ridge as part of the international MAR-ECO project.

More information about G.O. Sars is available on the IMR web site.
