Performance takes place at a high artistic level within classical music and jazz. We also cooperate closely with Ole Bull Akademiet, located in Voss, which offers studies in Norwegian folk music.
Composition at the Department is based on an experimental and contemporary approach within European kunstmusikk (i.e. art music).
PRACTICAL PEDAGOGICAL EDUCATION IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE
As a field, the task of Music Pedagogy is to explore the connection between the creative and pedagogical aspects of music. Here, an important research area is how the learning of music actually occurs.
Music Therapy is an interdisciplinary field, touching on musicology, medicine, pedagogy and the social sciences. It focuses on the relationship between music, the individual, society, health and development.
ETHNOMUSICOLOGY AND MUSICOLOGY
Ethnomusicology and Musicology are internationally oriented fields focused on music in various cultural contexts and as a cultural expression. Central to these fields is an understanding of music, both in itself and in relation to cultural theory.
