The Faculty of Law was established in 1980 though law studies at the
University of Bergen originally started in 1969. The Faculty has about
100 faculty staff and currently around 2200 students studying for a Master
Degree in Law.
The master programme in law requires five years of full time studies.
Each year consists of different courses, followed by a mandatory examination
at the end of each course. Admission to the master programme is restricted.
In addition, the Faculty of Law offers some law courses that are open
to all university students, some of them are offered in English.
The Faculty also offers a doctoral programme. Once admitted, the candidate
will join seminars and research courses enabling him or her to write his
or her doctorate thesis under Faculty staff authorised supervision.
The Faculty has been active in developing pilot projects exploring, among
other things, the use of ICT in course work and particularly in problem-based
learning.
It is an aim for the Faculty to have research qualifications within
every field of law that form the basis of our legal system.
The Faculty offers expertise within the fields of criminal law, law of
procedure (both criminal and civil), human rights and welfare law. Within
the area of private law there are reasons to emphasize law of obligations,
property law, construction law, tort law, corporate law and law of insolvency
and bankruptcy. The teachers working with these subjects are often involved
in the making of new bills.
New areas of research priority at the Faculty include EU- and competition
law, intellectual property law, coastal management and law relating to
aquaculture and fisheries.
