About the Department

The Department of Media Science and the Department of Information Science were, with effective from January 1st 2004, merged into a single department, the Department of Information Science and Media Studies. The new department is housed on the 5th and 6th floors of the Faculty of Social Sciences - in the Lauritz Meltzers building.

The background for the merger is the technology based convergence between various branches of media and forms of communication, and the extensive social consequences if the ICT revolution in general. The new technological platform created by the merger for new and old media also defines the common professional basis for the new department.

The new department studies, with varied approaches and methods, information and communications technologies, their historical, actual and potential functions in relation to individuals, groups, organisations, institutions and society, and their aesthetic aspects and subject matter.

The multi-faceted research carried out at the department reflects this. The merger has provided new resources for researching the new media society, and
a number of new study options have been developed based on this research. The department offers a number of theoretically and practically oriented studies in addition to the traditional academic subjects in the field of information science and media studies.

The Department of Information Science and Media Studies places great emphasis on creating scientifically active study environments. The department also seeks to contribute to a democratic public sphere through teaching, scientific research and research dissemination. Developing research on the overall joint theme "Democracy, the media and ICT" is therefore a priority.
