Jon Terje Geitung Associate professor (Head of section) Tlf. 55 97 92 57		Section for Geriatric Medicine Geriatrics is a subspeciality of internal medicine. It deals with the diseases and their consequences in the elderly. The professorship in Geriatrics was first establishe at the University of Bergen in 1986. The clinical section of geriatrics is attached to the Dept. of Medicine at the Diakonissehjemmets hospital. Teaching in Geriatrics has been little in the past, but it has now been given a bigger place in the new teaching programme. The new teachibng programme assumes that a part of the clinical teaching will be undertaken at som of the city nursing homes. The Geriatrics section has 1.2 permanent research positions and 1 research fellow. Research has mostly been concentrated on dementia, fall in the elderly and the us of drugs, especially psychopharmacological drugs. We have recentluy started a longitudinal study of patients who have been admitted for long term stay in a nursing home, and another study regarding coping resources and coping skills in the eldrly, aged 75 and over, living at hom, and who are in need of community health services.
