Project title: Quality of life and self-esteem among battered women at Norwegian women shelter.
Supervisors: Professor Bente Moen

Project title: Coping with mental health problems. An intervention study in groups with focus on salutogenesis
Supervisors: Astrid Klopstad Wahl, RN PhD
Berit Rokne Hanestad, RN PhD
Kjell Kristoffersen, RN PhD
Project objective/
Description:
Although the theory of salutogenesis provides generic understanding of how coping may be created, this theoretical perspective has not been explored sufficiently within research among people suffering from mental health problems.
The main purpose of this study is to develop salutogenic treatment principles and get knowledge about the effectiveness of these principles in talk therapy groups for persons living at home with mental health problems. The purpose of the treatment is to increase the participants` perception of social support, self-efficacy, coping, mental health and quality of life. To get knowledge about the participants own perception of mental health before and after treatment may contribute to organising rehabilitation where the purpose is to improve the participants` ability to cope with everyday life. All treatment- and caring activities ought to include self-evaluation which makes it possible to assess whether we do the right interventions in the right ways or not.
In an experimental design, the participants (residents in the community) are randomly allocated to a coping-enhancing experimental group and a control group receiving standard care. Coping is measured using the sense of coherence (SOC) questionnaire.

Project title: Coping resources and coping skills in the elderly, aged 75 +, living at home, who are in need of community health services.
Supervisors: Harald A. Nygaard, Professor, MD PhD
Torill Christine Lindstroem, Assoc.Prof., Cand.psychol, PhD
Project objective/
Description:
The aim of this study is to provide the health services with more knowledge about the elderly living at home. In particular, we are interested in knowledge about the coping resources and coping skills that enables old people to remain in their own homes, despite loss of health, social network, etc.
A major goal is to unravel the factors that brings health (salutogenesis), and therefore helps people to obtain successful tension management.
Empirically this leads to questions like; "Where do people find their strength and ability to cope"? and; "How do any of us manage to stay healthy"?

Project title: Doing gender in physiotherapy - from the patients point of view
Supervisors: Associate professor RN PhD Astrid Blystad
Associate professor PT PhD Målfrid Råheim
Project objective/
Description:
This study sees physiotherapy as interaction, communication, play and drama, and as a dense social happening which displays gender, power and sexuality within a male streamed, biomedical hierarchical health service framework. The displays are facilitated by the gender-inverted behaviour required within this setting (with respect to the heterosexual imperative) in same-sex relations, and in cross-sex relations where the physiotherapist (PT) is female and the patient is male. Physiotherapy in Norway is extremely gendered with respect to division of labour (male PTs in private clinics, female PTs in public health service), specialization (male PTs orthopaedic manipulative therapy or sports therapy, female PTs psychiatric psychosomatic therapy, geriatrics or children), income (male more successful), and recruitment (female upper middleclass, male lower middleclass), and holds a intense dilemma and conflict between active/passive treatment, maximal performance (fitness)/care and disability, intimacy/distance, - in other words the embedded conflict between the "caring mother" and the "instrumental father".

The aim of the study is to explore another voice - the patient's - and search for theory, models or practices, which make transgression possible, which opens a new language or way of thinking about therapy, gender, sexuality, power and intimacy, and subsequent gives PT and patient a broader register for doing therapy whilst doing gender, and constructing alternative understandings of the body, health and caring loving professional relations.

The empirical material is produced in same-sex discussion groups. 8 groups (5-8 participants); women (60-80) with chronic heart/lung diseases, women (60-80) with diverse rheumatics and so called medically unexplained disorders, men (50-80) heart/lung diseases, men (50-80) rheumatics, women (19-22) athletes with sport induced injuries (basket, volley ball, kick-boxing, hand ball), men (18-22) athletes with sport induced injuries (foot ball, hand ball), women (25-45) physically disabled, men (25-45) physically disabled

I am conducting the group discussions in collaboration with a fellow researcher (female for female groups, and vice versa). Theoretical framework: Constructionist feminist theory and methodology, discourse analysis, diverse performance, performativity and play theories.
