Purpose of the compendium

The Quality of Life Project in Bergen

The quality of life Project began in August 1993 and focused on quality of life in relation to chronic illness and the elderly. The three major aims were to strengthen nursing research in Norway by:

• motivating and carrying out research in the areas of quality of life, chronic illness and aging

• arranging research courses

• serving as a resource center for quality of life literature

Priorities for the project were development of the concept of quality of life, development and testing of quality of life instruments, and quality of life studies in relation to chronic illness and the elderly.

This compendium was developed to serve the third aim of the project by providing nurses and other health care providers in Norway with information regarding the conceptualization and measurement of quality of life and access to the instruments that were translated and validated by students during the project. A large (but incomplete) bibliography is provided which is intended to assist researchers to find appropriate background literature.

Sources of up-to-date information on quality of life measurement include the journals, Quality of Life Research and Social Indicators Research a journal of the International Society for Quality-of-Life studies (ISQOLS). M. Joseph Sirgy maintains an e-mail list for quality of life researchers, a service provided by the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies (ISQOLS). http://www.cob.vt.edu/market/isqols.
