PhD Project summary:

Title: Monitoring the future or providing an early warning of emerging drug trends?

The primary aim of the study is to take up the theoretical and empirical challenge of developing a methodology and a model for early identification and early warning (EW) of emerging drug trends. The specific research questions to be addressed by the project and published papers are:

  • To what extent can theoretical models (drawn from health, social sciences, marketing etc) enhance our understanding of the way new drug trends start and develop? And how can lessons learned from theoretical analysis be applied in the development of an efficient rapid reporting methodology?
  • Which drug measures or 'indicators' will need to be included in a drug monitoring system that is sensitive to the identification of new and changing patterns in use?
  • What are the key features required for a city level drug early warning system?
  • What are the advantages/ disadvantages of a local compared with a national model?
  • What are the major challenges associated with data reliability and validity in such a system and how might these be effectively addressed?
