Research area
My research at the Section for Occupational medicine, University of Bergen is the Assessment of dust, fumes and respiratory problems among coal mine workers in Kiwira Tanzania. The project is a result of cooperation between University of Bergen, Section for Occupational Medicine, Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences and Kiwira coal mine as a main stakeholder.

Kiwira coal mine has been in operation since 1988 with no exposure data and related respiratory health assessment. The project objectives are To assess the dust and fume exposure among workers, to determine the relationship between dust exposure and respiratory symptoms, to assess the determinants of dust exposures and to assess lung functions parameters among workers and come up with recommendations for workers and policy makers in Tanzania.
The project team
Mr Simon HD Mamuya - Research fellow (PhD Student), Prof Magne Bråtveit- Supervisor, Prof Bente Moen Project leader and Supervisor, Prof Yohana Mashalla -Project coodinator (TZ) and supervisor.
The first round of data collection taook place between June -September 2003 involved sampling of dust and gas (NH3, CO, and NO2), Interview using respiratory questionnaire. Laboratory analysis was done at X-lab in Bergen. Initial analysis came up with UIB M.Phil dissertation titled "Assessment of dust and respiratory symptoms among workers in Kiwira coal mine, Tanzania". Initial dissemination of the results to the workers and management was done in January 2004. As a capacity building the project aim to have a one Tanzanian at PhD level by 2006.

2. EMPLOYMENT:
Employee of Muhimbili university College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health, Community Health Department since 1991 as academic member of staff. My duties span from teaching, doing research and consultancies. I am responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in environmental and occupational health. I am also responsible in doing research and consultancies to various Ministries, Local and International NGOs in issues related to environmental and occupational health problems in Tanzania. Currently I am a research fellow at Section for Occupational Medicine, University of Bergen.
