3. How
do I unsubscribe from the Journal?
Send a message, without your signature file, as
above, but with the message:
unsubscribe jais
4. How
much does it cost to subscribe?
Access to the electronic files of
the Journal are
currently free. This subscription policy will be reviewed each year in the
light of experience during previous years. It is in any event the goal of the
editors to continue to make the electronic files available at the lowest
possible cost. The cost of paper copies is determined by the publisher,
Edinburgh University Press, which may also determine to control access to the
electronic files. Subcription costs 2007.
5. How
often is the Journal published?
There are no set publication dates, and
articles are published as soon as they are received and approved and have been
formatted. Volumes, with the exception of the first, will normally be closed at
the end of each year or every two years.
6. How
will I know when new articles have been published?
Subscribers will be informed by e-mail when new
material is available.
7. I am
thinking of submitting an article. Is there a style guide?
Yes. Please see the JAIS
Style Guide.
8. What
format is used for articles
Material is released in pre-publication form in
Adobe Acrobat PDF files, which in principle retain all of the formatting of
traditional paper publications when viewed on the computer screen or printed
out. Parallel HTML Unicode files, which offer greater searching possibilities
and future convertibility, are posted when the paper version appears.
9. How
long will it take to post an article after I send it in?
As much as three months, possibly more, for
review, and some months for reformatting, if necessary.
10. Does
it matter whether I use a PC or a MAC?
In principle no. The Journal accepts material
prepared on both platforms. But it is technically much easier for us if
articles containing Arabic script are submitted in Word for Windows. See the Style Guide
for more details.
11. What word processors can I use to
prepare submissions?
Microsoft Word
(all Windows and Macintosh versions), and, if necessary, Mellel
or Nisus. With
Macintosh files there will be problems with non-Latin scripts, and the authors
may be asked to have longer passages retyped in Microsoft Word for Windows. All
Microsoft Word files should be saved in a version no higher than 2003. Nisus
files should be saved as version 3.4 when possible. All files should be
accompanied by an Adobe Acrobat PDF file or hard copy.
12. Is it possible to view and print out
text in Arabic script?
With Adobe Acrobat Reader it is possible to
view and print Arabic script. Regarding HTML files, the latest Internet
browsers can handle Arabic text, but cause problems with the composite JAIS1 TTW font, which we no longer use. We are in the process of
converting all our articles to Unicode.
13. What fonts may I use?
Times New Roman (preferably Vista
Version, which includes letters with dots/lines beneath) or JaghbUni
(a variant of Times) for either PC or Mac. Gentium or Doulos SIL are also
possibilities. See also Knut S. Vikør’s ARABIC HOME PAGE, particularly on Unicode
fonts and the Jaghbub font family, basically for the
Mac, but much information for PC users as well.
14. In what languages may one submit an
article?
English, French, German, Italian, or
Spanish.
15. Where may I find further information?
Please see the file General Information .
