STYLE GUIDE
This file contains notes
and guidance on the preparation of electronic manuscripts for the Journal.
For the convenience of
authors, the Journal treats submission and publication as a two stage process.
Guidelines on submission will be found in part one of this document.
Guidelines on preparing an accepted manuscript for publication will be
found in part two.
All authors should follow the
guidelines for submission. The guidelines for publication concern
only those authors who have been informed by the Journal that their work has
been accepted for publication.
PART ONE: SUBMISSION
The Journal currently
accepts contributions in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Manuscripts should
preferably be submitted in Microsoft Word for Windows, any version up to the
latest, but it should be noted that the Journal does not currently make use of
any Word features in versions above 2003. Please try to avoid submissions in
word-processors other than Word. On the Macintosh platform, submissions in
Microsoft Word are acceptable, although this program has no left-to-right
support. Converting transliterated texts is not a very big problem. Remember
that in the production process your file will be converted to Microsoft Word
for Windows. We have had considerable trouble converting Nisus files, and as
yet have no experience with Mellel, although we are willing to try. Mac authors
may be asked to have longer Arabic texts typed again in Word for Windows. For
more on Arabic for the Mac, consult Knut Vikør's page The Arabic Mac: An Informal Resource Center.
In all cases send both the
original word-processor file and an Adobe Acrobat PDF file produced on your own
machine or one with the same diacritic fonts installed. (We have too little
experience with Microsoft's MDI files to be able to recommend them.) If you
cannot send a PDF file, send hard copy separately.
A. All submissions should
be preceded by a header containing the title of the manuscript, certain
information about it, the name(s) of the author(s), any affiliations, mail and
e-mail addresses, and telephone and telefax numbers. The header should be formatted
as in the following example:
a) Category of submission: Research Article,
Review Article (Book, Article),
Review Article (Software), Communication,
Software Review.
b) Title: Ghazal in Early Arabic Poetry
c) Author(s): Jane Doe and John H. Smith
d) Word length: 9,999 words
e) Fonts used in file: Times New Roman (Vista
Version), JaghbUni, Gentium, Doulos SIL, etc.
f) Date of submission: 1 January 2007
g) Address:

Name of Department
Full Postal Address
E-Mail Address

B. In the
case of research articles or review articles, please include an abstract of no
more than 150 words after the header.

Please note that
submissions to the Journal on paper or diskette will not be returned. The
Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies cannot be held responsible for loss of or
damage to unsolicited material.
PART TWO: PUBLICATION
The information contained
in this section concerns only those authors who have received notification that
their submission has been accepted for publication.
A. Manuscripts should be
preceded by a header containing the same information and formatted in the same
manner as the example under A above.
B. In the case of articles
and review articles, please include an abstract of no more than 150 words after
the header. The abstract should be followed by the text of the manuscript
according to the format described below.
C. Manuscripts should
conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, the MLA (Modern Language
Association), or other standard guidelines, and should preferably be submitted
in a fully formatted word processor version in accordance with the style sheet
given below. Use preferably the fonts we recommend in the file Fonts.
Please do not use the transliteration font for your whole article, unless it is
entirely in English. Spell-checking only works for English and other languages
with no diacritics, so any German titles you cite, for example, will have to
checked by eye.
Greek, Cyrillic, and other
non-Latin characters may be transliterated. Authors planning to use an Arabic
