Holberg Prize


Holberg International Memorial Prize is awarded annually for outstanding scholarly work in the fields of the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology. Nils Klim Prize is awarded to Nordic scholars under 35 years of age within the same disciplines.

Award ceremony for Holberg Prize 2012 and Nils Klim Prize 2012 is on Wedensday June 6 at the Håkonshallen, Bergen. 

The Holberg Prize Symposium 2012 is at the Store Auditorium, Studentsenteret, Parkveien 1, Tuesday June 5.

Holberg International Memorial Prize 2012: Manuel Castells

The Holberg International Memorial Prize 2012 is awarded to the Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells. From the citation of the Holberg Prize Academic Committee:

"Manuel Castells is the leading sociologist of the city and new information and media technologies. His ideas and writings have shaped our understanding of the political dynamics of urban and global economies in the network society."

The Holberg International Prize is worth NOK 4.5 million (approx. EUR 575,000/USD 775,000*)

Nils Klim Prize 2012: Sara Hobolt
Nils Klim Prize 2012 is awarded to the Danish political scientist Sara Hobolt. From the citation of the Nils Klim Prize Academic Committee:

"Sara Hobolt’s research covers a wide range of key issues in studies of comparative politics: European integration, elections and referendums, but also the interaction between media, processes of opinion formation and responsiveness and responsibility of political elites and party systems."  Read more.

Nils Klim Prize is worth NOK 250.000 (approx. EUR32,000/USD42,000).

Holberg Prize School Project
An important part of the objective of the Holberg Prize is to stimulate young people to take an interest in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology.

Every year students at upper secondary schools in Norway are invited to carry out a research project in cooperation with established researchers. The prizewinning students are also invited to attend the Holberg Prize award ceremony. A teacher's grant is also awarded in connection with the Holberg Prize School Project. Read more.

The Holberg Prize is administered by the University of Bergen. The secretariat is formally attached to the office of the University Director. 

The Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund was established by the Norwegian Parliament 1 July 2003. On its inception, the fund's capital was NOK 200 million. The main purpose of the memorial fund is to raise the status of the academic fields of the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology.
