Characterisation of the reservoir
Prognoses for reservoir flow is in a large part based on knowledge of the macroscopic material properties of the reservoir, which determines the distribution and migration of fluids.
In the equations governing the flow, material properties appear as parameters. Characterisation of the reservoir consists of determining these parameters. The goal is to develop a model of the reservoir that can then be used as a basis for numerical simulations. This is challenging since the reservoir is often far below the earth's surface and it is not easy to get good measurements that can be used as an information source.
