Admission

To be admitted as a PhD-candidate at the Department of Molecular Biology, you will normally have to successfully apply for a vacant PhD fellowship at the department or at a collaborating institution.

Admission to the PhD-programme requires:

  • That you fill the formal requirements, which means that you have to have a degree corresponding to a norwegian masters within a relevant academic field, and with average grades of C or better.
  • That you have financing for salary and other expenses for 3 full years (or for 4 years if you are a PhD-fellow receiving your financing through the University's budget).

The Department (MBI) will accept candidates who are employed at MBI and have their research project associated with one of our own research groups. Candidates employed at the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (Sars) will be admitted through the Department if relevant with regard to the research project – but may also be affiliated with other departments.

We also accept candidates employed at external institutions such as the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), when relevant with regard to the research project.

The first step towards admission is therefore to apply for an available PhD-fellowship at MBI or at an institution cooperating with us. All PhD-vacancies at the University of Bergen are posted here.
