Admission - Summary


Requirements upon admission to the programme of doctoral education and the process of submitting the application.

Admission requirements - PhD

  • The applicant must have obtained a higher degree, equivalent to the five-year Norwegian master's programme, cand.med. cand.odont., cand.psychol., or similar education or other competence the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry approves.

  • Applicants with education from abroad must submit an evaluation of the scope and level of the education. Certificates have to be translated by a licensed translator if not in English or German, and original certificates shall be produced on request.

  • All those who are allocated a workplace at or in connection with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to work on a doctoral degree must have been admitted to the Faculty's doctoral degree programme. Anyone interested in applying must contact the appropriate department before applying.

  • Admission depends on sufficient funding for the entire programme period (three years). The applicant must therefore submit a plan for full financial coverage, with documentation of awarded scholarship or research funding. The Faculty does not provide scholarships.

Submission of application

An application for admission to organised research programme must include:

  • A plan for the proposed doctoral training programme, including a time schedule and a plan for the training and the dissemination component.

  • Documentation of previous education which constitutes the basis for admission.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).

  • A brief project description which specifies theme, research questions and choice of theory and methodology, and plans for stays at other research institutions or activities.

  • Documentation of sufficient funding / copy of letter of employment.

  • Academic evaluation from supervisor.

    Application for admission must be sent through the department with which the applicant wishes to be affiliated. The department undertakes an initial evaluation of the application pursuant to the provisions in force and then forwards the application for admission to the Faculty.

    The application must be signed by the candidate, his or her principal supervisor and the chairman of the department with which the candidate wishes to be affiliated. The principal supervisor should be employed by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
