Can analyses of capitalism help enable climate and energy transformation?

Don Kalb (https://www.uib.no/en/persons/Donatus.Pius.Kalb) is a senior researcher moving to the University of Bergen's Department of Social Anthropology in 2018. He is putting together a team of researchers to work on his 'Frontlines of Value' project about capitalism in the 21st century. Capitalism, like climate and energy transformation, is ubiquitous. Both have complex and intertwining histories, and we face current dilemmas and crises that concern both these overarching aspects of systems change and obduracy. Don offers profound insights on capitalism from his rich body of work and his experiences from multiple appointments, e.g. in social sciences and cultural anthropology at Utrecht University, in sociology and social anthropology at the Central European University, with a research group on financialisation at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, and at the City University of New York.

In this coffee-and-cake seminar, Don will present an overview of his project 'Frontlines: Class, Value, and Social Transformation in 21st Century Capitalism' (see https://www.uib.no/en/news/102926/identifying-new-class-inequalities) and tease out scope for engagement with ongoing research on climate and energy transformation in Bergen. This is the kick-off for a concerted effort towards productive engagement between these distinct research fields.
