Towards high-resolution observation and modelling of the South
Atlantic-Southern Ocean: understanding the role of the seasonal cycle

Abstract
The Southern Ocean is the most effective carbon sink of the world's
oceans. However, many ocean models represent the air-sea carbon fluxes
poorly here when compared to observations. The Southern Ocean Carbon and
Climate Observatory (SOCCO) aims to minimize this discrepancy by
understanding the role of the mesoscale to submesoscale and seasonal to
subseasonal scales on upper-ocean dynamics through increasing insitu
observations as well as the use of ocean-biogeochemical models.
Identification of the driving forces of the air-sea CO2-fluxes in this
region would allow better evaluation of model sensitivity and provide
better constraints for future model projections.
