Recent geohazards in Norway - are they unique in a historical perspective?

Abstract
In historic time, about 4000 people have lost their lives in different types of avalanche incidents in Norway (Furseth, 2006). Statistically, we may expect 2-3 rock slides, 2-3 clay slides and 3-4 snow avalanches causing serious damage and casualties during the coming 100 years (skrednett.no).

Different types of geohazard events over the later years will be discussed in the context of previously reported historic events. Examples of modern and past landslides (clay-/mudslides), submarine slides, rock-slope failures/rock slides, debris flows, snow avalanches, jøkulhlaups (glacier lake outburst floods), and river floods in Norway will be given. Approaches of how to extend historic records of geohazards and extreme weather events from geological archives will be presented.
