Economic Plants in Botanical Garden – a multicultural rendez-vous

This year, we have a display of special vegetables from Asia and Ancient Rome, and also cereal grains from Afghanistan.

Hovedinnhold

In the ancient East Asian civilisations, many kinds of plants were grown, including various kinds of vegetables. Some of these cultivars are shown in the useful plants section of the Botanical Garden.

From the north-east of Afghanistan, in Hindukush, we have grains and capers. These are some of the very few useful plants that grow in this mountainous region (up to 3000 m).

In ancient Rome, they also cultivated many different types of vegetables – come and see for yourself what they were using – e.g. cauliflower and broccoli.

In addition, we have a splendid potato field with many different varieties. In the cornfield, we have cultivated various types of wheat grains. We also have a lot of peas and beans, among them, the Ringerike Pea and the garden pea “jærert” from Jæren, and a whole lot more.

Welcome to a thrilling introduction to exotic plants in the Economic Plants Garden!

In addition to all this, you can also enjoy the flowering and fragrance from heritage, modern and wild roses in Naustdalen. Plan a visit to the Arboretum and the Botanical Garden this summer.
