Arne Östman

Professor Arne Östman received his PhD in 1990 on Plateletderived growth factor from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Uppsala University, Sweden. He is currently professor at the Karolinska Institute (KI).

Hovedinnhold

Professor Östman’s research, including more than 170 original research articles, is focused on the biology of tumor microenvironment with special focus on tumor-associated fibroblasts and their role in cancer progression (https://ki.se/en/people/arne-ostman).

Professor Östman coordinated the STARGET Center-of-Excellence at Karolinska Institutet (2006-16) and was vice-coordinator of STRATCAN, a government-funded initiative for development of excellent cancer research at KI (2010-2018). He is a member of the Nobel Assembly since 2020.

In the CCBIO context, and the Professor II appointment at UiB since 2015, Östman has obtained three rounds of funding from the Norwegian Cancer Society, as well as funding from Helse Vest used for exploratory and translational studies on breast cancer tumor microenvironment. The project is performed in close collaboration with the Akslen group, and also includes work with Teijo Pellinen at the EMBL-sponsored FIMM institute in Helsinki.

Together with Akslen, Östman acted as co-organizer of the first Scandinavian Pathology Seminar (SCANPATH) at Sotra in 2016, gathering Scandinavian tumor pathologists and cancer researchers. The initiative has since been followed by SCANPATH meetings in Sigtuna, Sweden (2017), Tuusula, Finland (2018) Os, Norway (2019), Tylösand, Sweden (2021), Solstrand, Norway (2022) and Hannaholmen, Finland (2023). Östman also contributed with one chapter to each of the two review collections edited by Akslen and Watnick.
