Identitet, makt, språk, kunnskaps produksjon, internasjonal migrasjon og etniske relasjoner er mine hovedforskningsfelt.

Fra 1987 og gjennom hele 1990-tallet forsket jeg på forhold i den arabiske Gulfen, nærmere bestemt Kuwait. Min forskning dekker forskjellige aspekter ved det kuwaitiske samfunn, bl.a.: arbeidsmigrasjon særlig fra Midtøsten og Asia, etniske relasjoner mellom kuwaitere og arbeidsmigranter preget av makt og underkastelse; kvinners stilling; utformingen av kuwaitisk selvbilde og nasjonal identitet; den ambivalente kategorien ‘beduin’; og konseptualisering av statsborgerskap og demokrati i et samfunn preget av arbeidsinnvandring, rentenistøkonomi, velferdsstat, og en kulturell tradisjon bygget på islam og stammeideologi.

I 2003 skiftet jeg fokus fra etnisk mangfold til religiøst mangfold, og satte i gang et forskningsprosjekt om Libanon. Dette er et forsøk på å forklare Libanons hverdagslige (i motsetning til politiske) konfesjonalisme ved å se på kunnskaps produksjon i vid forstand. Av de relevante institusjoner bak denne produksjonen har jeg valgt å rette spesielt fokus mot familien og skolen. Feltarbeid foregår i Beirut hovedsakelig blant maronitiske og gresk-ortodokse kristne. I dette prosjektet opptar ‘stat’ og ‘sivilsamfunn’ en betydelig plass i analysen.

Parallelt med min pågående forskning i Libanon, har jeg i det siste utviklet prosjektet ‘Terms of reference and address and notions of personhood’. Her tar jeg utgangspunkt i hypotesen om at det finnes en nær forbindelse mellom konseptualisering av selv og individualitet på den ene side og språkstruktur, især bruken av personlige pronomener, på den annen. I en rekke østasiatiske språk, deriblant vietnamesisk, er bruken av pronomenet jeg nesten fraværende. Jeg ser på virkninger av dette fraværet på språkbrukernes selvbevissthet. I den første delen av forskningsarbeidet utføres feltarbeid i sør California, hvor det største vietnamesiske diasporamiljøet befinner seg.
