Esperanza Diaz er lege med utdannelse fra Spania (1995) og spesialist i allmennmedisin i Norge siden 2003. I tillegg til stillingene hennes som leder av Pandemisenteret siden 2020 og professor ved Institutt for Global helse og samfunnsmedisin ved UiB, jobber hun også som seniorforsker (20 %) ved Høgskulen på Vestlandet.

Diaz har forsket på innvandrerhelse siden 2008, skrevet over hundre fagfellevurderte artikler om emnet og utgitt boken Migrant Health: A Primary Care Perspective. Esperanza Diaz har lang erfaring med å samarbeide på tvers av fakulteter, institusjoner og grupper i befolkningen.

Diaz har utviklet og ledet Pandemisenteret siden 2020. Senteret er administrativt forankret ved IGS, men er et interdisiplinært senter med representanter fra alle sju fakulteter ved UiB. Å jobbe på tvers av fagområder og med ikke akademiske miljøer, samt inkludering av sosial ulikhet i helse i et pandemisk perspektiv har vært nøkkelord i forskningen til Diaz de siste årene.

I 2023 leder hun NFR-finansiert prosjektet Integrering for helse(link), som følger prosjektet Endringer i helse- og helsebehov blant syriske flyktninger på vei til Norge. Hun er også involvert som partner i andre NFR-prosjekter som EqualPart (On Equal Grounds? Migrant Women’s Participation in Labour and Labour Related Activities (EQUALPART) - Høgskulen på Vestlandet (hvl.no)) og vil fra 2024 også være partner i det EU-finansierte UniHealth-prosjektet.

Diaz har undervist om flere temaer relatert til allmennmedisin, blant annet klinisk konsultasjon, ØNH i allmennpraksis, svangerskapskontroll i allmennpraksis, klinisk møte med pasienter fra andre kulturer, narrativ medisin, og uheldige hendelser, som en del av stillingen ved UiB. De siste årene har hun hovedsakelig undervist i migrasjon og helse og pandemirelaterte temaer. I begge emner har hun utviklet egne PhD/emnekurs (link)
