Hjertesykdom hos kvinner er vårt overbyggende forskningsfokus. Hjertesykdom hos kvinner undersøkes i samarbeid med internasjonale partnere i Tyskland, Italia og USA. Hovedfokus er hjertesykdom som følge av høyt blodtrykk, aortaklaffestenose, fedme og autoimmune sykdommer, og hvordan disse faktorene belaster hjertet ulikt hos kvinner og menn. Vår forskning har bidratt til nye europeiske anbefalinger om behandling av høyt blodtrykk hos pasienter med aortaklaffstenose, og et internasjonalt fokus på hjertesykdom hos kvinner. Dette forsker vi på i norske befolkningsundersøkelser og i prosjekter med kliniske studier av personer med høyt blodtrykk, fedme, aortaklaffestenose, autoimmune sykdommer eller iskemisk hjerneslag. Et nytt Senter for forskning på hjertesykdom hos kvinner ble opprettet ved UiB juni 2020 finansiert av Hjertefondet ved UiB, Bergen Sanitetskvinner/Norske Kvinners Sanitetsforening og Grieg Foundation (https://www.uib.no/kvinnehjerte). Vår videre forskning vil tilknyttes Senterets nettverk.

Helseundersøkelsen i Hordaland - runde 3 (HUSK3) ble gjennomført 2018-22. Hovedfokus er hva blodtrykk og andre helsefaktorer og endring i disse mens man er i 40-årene betyr for hjerte-kar helsen 20 år senere. Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom 4 forskergrupper på UiB ledet av henholdsvis professor Grethe S. Tell, professor Ottar Nygård, professor Jutta Dierkes, undertegnede, BEVITAL akademisk laboratorium og Høgskolen på Vestlandet ved professor Marjolein Iversen. Ukontrollert høyt blodtrykk er et stort helseproblem i Norge. I samarbeid med de 4 øvrige universiteter forsker vi på dette i IDA studien. I samarbeid med overlege PhD Marianne Grytaas, endokrinologisk seksjon, medisinsk avdeling, Haukeland Universitetssykehus forsker vi på pasienter med primær aldosteronisme som underliggende årsak til høyt blodtrykk. Vårt hovedfokus er hvordan ukontrollert høyt blodtrykk påvirker hjertet, og om påvirkningen er forskjellig hos kvinner og menn eller utfra hva årsaken til det høye blodtrykket er. Kvinner med autoimmune sykdommer har høy risiko for å få hjertesykdom tidlig. I samarbeid med revmatologisk avdeling, Haukeland Universitetssykehus studerer vi hjerteeffekten av moderne immunmodulerende behandling ved leddgikt. Subklinisk hjertekarsykdom hos unge slagpasienter undersøkes i NOR-SYS prosjektet i samarbeid med professor Ulrike Waje-Andreassen, nevrologisk avdeling, Haukeland Universitetssykehus som ble startet i 2010. Oppfølgingsundersøkelsene ved Hjerteavdelingen ble fullført 2022. Hjerteultralydbilder fra den europeiske studien SECRETO på slagpasienter under 50 år sendes for analyse i våre kjernelaboratorium. FEMALE HEART project (kvinnehjerteprosjektet)

Prosjektet startet i 2012 som et samarbeid mellom vår forskergruppe og forskergrupper ved Norges arktiske universitet i Tromsø og Federico II Universitetet i Napoli, Italia. Prosjektet er translasjonelt og omfatter både dyreeksperimentelle og kliniske studier. Fokus er å forstå hvorfor høyt blodtrykk er mer skadelig for kvinnehjertet, og nye metoder for tidlig påvisning av slik hjerteskade. Prosjektet pågår fortsatt. En årlig Female Heart workshop arrangeres ved UiB for å spre ny kunnskap fra prosjektet. 

Helseundersøkelsen i Hordaland - 3. runde (HUSK3)

Ble gjennomført 2018-22. Fokus på hvordan høyt blodtrykk i 40 årene påvirker kvinner og menns helse når de er 20 år eldre. Oppfølging av 2192 personer. Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom 5 forskergrupper ved UiB og Helse-Bergen. 

Fedmeassosiert hjertekardysfunksjon (FATCOR)

Fokus på hvordan fedme påvirker hjertets- og pulsårenes funksjon hos kvinner og menn. Tverrsnittsundersøkelse av 618 friske personer med fedme. Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom 5 forskergrupper ved UiB og Helse-Bergen. En oppfølgingsundersøkelse av deltakerne starter 2022. Fokus er endring av blodtrykk midt i livet, hvilke faktorer som har betydning for at blodtrykket stiger, og kartlegging av underliggende mekanismer.

Norwegian Stroke in the Young Studien (NORSYS) - 5 års studien

Studien er et samarbeid mellom forskere ved nevrologisk avdeling og hjerteavdelingen, Haukeland Universitetssykehus og Klinisk institutt 2. Prosjektet startet i 2010 og 385 pasienter ble rekruttert i perioden 2010-15. Disse ble invitert til en substudie hvor blodtrykk og arteriestivhet ble kontrollert påny etter 5 år.
