Mine akademiske interesser er innenfor både økonomiske, sosiale og ideologiske aspekter av forhistoriske samfunn. Min forskning er for tiden konsentrert om to ulike tema: (1) jeger- og fiskerfolk på kysten av Norge i steinalder, og (2) bruken av huler og hellere. Mitt arbeid innenfor temaområdene er primært basert på eget feltarbeid på mange ulike lokaliteter i Vest-Norge, på generering og analyse av arkeologiske "stordata" og på omfattende internasjonalt samarbeid med andre arkeologer så vel som med botanikere, zoologer og geologer. Jeg er spesielt opptatt av å drøfte den demografiske utviklingen i løpet av steinalder i regionen, framveksten av bofaste marine jeger og fiskerfolk og av introduksjonen av jordbruksøkonomi. Min forskning om huler og hellere tar for seg en lengre tidsperiode og har en vid geografisk ramme. Deres spesielle karakter som «naturlige steder» og gode bevaringsforhold for organisk materiale gjør dem helt unike som arkeologiske kontekster og for tverrfaglige tilnærminger omkring betydning og bruk.
