Shaping the political arena

David and Ruth Collier (Berkeley) in conversation with Michael Alvarez (UiB).

Hovedinnhold

Shaping the political arena is widely considered to be a landmark
contribution to the literature on political regimes and the legalization
and institutionalization of labor movements. It is a broadly comparative
historical analysis of eight Latin American countries and the historical
roots of different forms of labor mobilization, their interaction with
different forms of state control, and their consequences for subsequent
historical patterns of regime change. In addition to the substantive
findings, the book is universally considered to be a model for how to
expertly apply qualitative research methods for the comparative study of
political phenomena. The book has played a key role in inspiring
countless other researchers to study the dynamics of political change via
identifying critical junctures and path dependence, and tracing causal
processes over time. The book's broad comparative scope allows the
authors to analyze the political differences in how labor movements were
incorporated into the political arena and the effects that these
historical legacies had for subsequent regime change in Latin America.

You are most welcome to join our literary salon when Collier & Collier discuss the book,  Shaping the political arena, with our moderator Michael Alvarez.
